The Fees That Hide Inside Every Sale

The fee owners most often do not know they are paying is the one built into every sale rather than charged on a line of its own — why it slips past you, and how to see yours.

The Fee Nobody Points At

Ask a business owner which fee on their processing statement they did not know they were paying, and the answer is usually the same one. Not a monthly charge, not a statement fee, not something with a name they had to look up. The plain cost of taking the sale itself — the transaction fee.

The reason it goes unnoticed is not that it is hidden on purpose. It is that it is not a charge sitting on a line of its own. It is built into every single sale the business takes, so when an owner looks down their statement there is nothing called out for them to point at. The statement shows the sales, and it shows what came off those sales, and the second part is where this lives.

That makes it different in kind from everything else on the page. A monthly fee is a thing you can find, circle and ask about. This one is spread across the whole month of trading, threaded through every card the business took, and it never appears as a single line anybody could put a finger on.

So this post is about that one fee and nothing else: the cost that is built into each sale rather than added on top of the month. It is not a checklist of what to gather before a switch, and it is not a walk through the statement line by line — those are separate subjects, covered separately. This is the one that lives inside the sale itself.

Why It Slips Past You

The way a cost reaches you decides how much attention it gets. A charge that arrives as a bill gets looked at. It has an amount on it, a date, and a due line, and it asks you a question every month whether you want it to or not. A cost that comes out of each sale as it happens asks you nothing. It simply never arrives.

That is the whole mechanism. The cost is taken as the sale is taken, quietly, and what reaches the account is what was left. Nothing on the business’s side ever presents it as a decision, because by the time the owner sees a number, that number is already net of it.

It does not feel like something you can question either. There is no invoice to dispute and no line to query, because it never came to you as a separate charge in the first place. It is simply the difference between what the business sold and what the business kept.

Over a month of trading it adds up across every card the business takes — but it adds up the way water adds up in a bucket with a small hole in it. Gradually, in the background, without any single moment where it becomes obvious. A busy month means more of them and a quiet month means fewer, and either way no one sale ever draws attention to itself.

The result is a cost a business can be paying every day for years without anybody having looked at it directly. Not through carelessness, but because nothing about the way it arrives was ever designed to be looked at.

How To See Yours

You do not need to be an accountant to see what this costs your business. You need your own figures and a few minutes. Here is how to actually find it.

  • Take a recent statement and read it alongside what the business actually sold over the same period. The statement describes what came off your sales, and your own sales records say what those sales were — put the two next to each other and the gap between them is the thing worth understanding.
  • Look at the rate you were quoted, and then look at everything charged outside that rate. The quoted rate is the number an owner remembers; what the business actually paid is the total of every line. The difference between the two is where a cost that hides inside a sale tends to sit.
  • Work out the cost across a whole month rather than judging it sale by sale. A single sale tells you almost nothing, because the amount is small enough to dismiss. A month of trading, added together, tells you what it is really costing you.
  • Do that with your own numbers and you will have your answer. What it comes to is different for every business, because it depends on how much a business sells and how its customers pay — which is exactly why nobody else can tell you what your figure is.

Questions Worth Asking

Once your own figures are in front of you, these are the questions worth putting to whoever you process with — and worth putting to anybody you are considering. They are all questions about your own arrangement, and the answers belong in writing.

  • What is my actual rate?
  • What is charged on top of that rate?
  • Is anything taken from each sale as it happens, and how much?
  • What does all of it come to over a year?

Those answers come from whoever holds your agreement, not from a page on a website. Anything that turns on what your own contract commits you to, what it says about ending it, or how any of it should be treated for your accounts, is a question for the provider you are with and for your own accountant or adviser. That is not us, and we will not pretend otherwise.

The Arrangement We Offer

Since the subject is where the card cost sits, it is fair to say plainly how we handle it, in our own terms and without dressing it up.

With Cash Discount, your card processing fees come to 0% instead of a percentage of every sale. The equipment is zero cost with a business account, and if you already have a terminal or other equipment in place, we swap it out for ours at no cost to you. There is no contract and there are no termination fees, so leaving does not carry a penalty and there is no term running quietly in the background. And a restaurant gets 3 months free marketing alongside it.

That is the whole of it, with nothing underneath those things. We are not going to tell you what another provider charges, and we are not going to put a figure on what your own business is paying today, because we have not seen your figures and we would be guessing. What we will do is sit down with your statement and go through it with you.

Where To Start

The starting point is a recent statement. Call us on (916) 918-7017, or send your details through the form on this site, and we will go through it with you line by line, in plain language.

Our offer is the same things it always is and nothing more: zero cost equipment, 0% fees with Cash Discount, and 3 months free marketing. If the honest answer is that what you already have is working for you, we will tell you that instead. There is no obligation to go further, and no pressure either way.

The takeaway

The fee owners most often do not know they are paying is the one built into every sale rather than charged on a line of its own — which is exactly why nothing ever draws attention to it. Take a recent statement, read it against what your business actually sold, and work out the cost across a whole month rather than sale by sale. Send us a recent statement and we will go through it with you.
